Half Moon Bay lifesaver shines at Coolangatta Gold

Coolangatta Gold 2013

Half Moon Bay SLSC's Emma Armstrong has placed 10th out of lifesaving's most elite competitors from across the country in the Schick Hydro Coolangatta Gold 2013 Long Course, held on the Gold Coast, 19-20 October.

The Schick Hydro Coolangatta Gold is the ultimate festival of surf, sand and sweat, boasting one of the most physically challenging endurance races of its kind.

For the first time in history it was announced this year that women could compete in the Long Course of 41.8km, and having completed in the Short Course in 2009 and 2011, Miss Armstrong jumped at the opportunity for a new challenge.

"As soon as I found out that the girls could race the long course for the first time, I knew I would be giving it a shot," said Miss Armstrong.

A dedicated athlete, Miss Armstrong made sure she was prepared for the competition by completing four or five swim sessions, three ski sessions, two board sessions and three run sessions each week, as well as a long Saturday morning session that replicated race distances in the lead up to the event.

"When I crossed the line, everyone told me straight away I had come 10th and I was ecstatic! That's what I'd been hoping I could do all year and I felt relieved to have achieved my goal."

Also flying the flag for Victoria in the results tally was Lorne SLSC's Tristan Read who placed fourth in the 30-39 age group and Fairhaven SLSC's Brad Cummins who wasn't far behind placing sixth in the same category.

LSV's Aquatic Sports Coordinator - Senior Sport, Tom Mitchell said all of Victoria's competitors did a fantastic job.

"Everyone who flew north for this grueling event has to be extremely proud of their efforts. Such a course really puts any athlete to the test and pushes their bodies to the extreme," he said.

As Miss Armstrong sets her sights on her next challenge to become SLSA's Victorian Open Ironwoman for the second time, LSV is gearing up for a busy summer in lifesaving sport starting with the Victorian Endurance Championships on Sunday 10 November 2013.
