Catch the Wave and Join Us Now!
The primary mission of Victorian lifesaving clubs is to provide a safe and enjoyable aquatic experience for all visitors to our beaches. Over the summer period (end November through to Easter) lifesaving clubs provide volunteer beach patrols at 57 Victorian beaches on weekends and public holidays. As a patrolling member of a lifesaving club you will play an important role in the provision of this vital community service.
Victoria's coastline and inland waterways are unique and their recreational opportunities endless. Life Saving Victoria is keen to ensure that all visitors are aware of their own abilities and the potential dangers at the beach. Lifesaving clubs train volunteer lifesavers in aquatic rescue and resuscitation techniques as well as offering water safety education to the general beach going public.
Lifesaving is able to offer all volunteers:
- Aquatic Education and Training
- Membership Development, Growth and Support
- Youth and Leadership Development
- Skills and Fitness
and all at a beach located near you.
Lifesaving clubs are equipped with up-to-date and well maintained equipment, ensuring that members have access to the latest rescue techniques and aids.
A number of lifesaving clubs in Victoria offer 24 hour emergency support services in partnership with other community emergency services for handling aquatic incidents.
Becoming a Lifesaver
Lifesaving is an activity for all ages. The minimum age to become an active lifesaver is 13 years of age. The two main lifesaving awards and their prerequisites are:
Surf Rescue Certificate
- Be a minimum of 13 years of age on the date of the final assessment
- Have completed a 200 metre swim in five minutes in a pool or open water
Surf Lifesaving Bronze Medallion
- Be a minimum of 15 years of age on the date of the final assessment
- Have completed a 400 metre swim in nine minutes in a pool or open water
Most lifesaving clubs run bronze camps, usually in November/December each year. The camps typically run over a week period and are designed as a live-in training environment.
Clubs also deliver training to suit schools, community groups and individuals, with the focus on ease of delivery and catering to the individuals/groups availability.
Remember that lifesaving does not limit members to water-based activities
Life Saving Victoria offers opportunities for all and is actively seeking volunteers in all areas of the organisation. Lifesaving offers awards and certificates in:
- Resuscitation (Basic and Advanced)
- First Aid
- Powercraft Vehicles (Offshore & Inshore)

- Operations Vehicles (4WDs & ATVs)
