The Winter Development Squad is run throughout the off season for athletes between Under 13 to Under 15. Membership of the squad is by invitation and selections are made from the results of the Victorian Lifesaving Championships and other observations of the coaches who are responsible for delivery of the program at carnivals throughout the season.

There is also the opportunity for clubs to recommend an individual athlete to the Head Coach of the WDS for inclusion in the squad.

The WDS provides athletes with additional coaching and skill training opportunities throughout the winter.The program includes cross training, pool training and competition training and is directed to assist junior athletes in improving their skills and abilities.

There are no formal criteria for inclusion in the squad but numbers are limited to the capabilities of coach and venue staffing and duty of care coach / athlete ratio considerations.

Invitations for all athletes who made top 3 in beach and top 6 in ocean events at the 2011 Victorian Junior Lifesaving Championships have received an invitation. For anyone who does not fit this criteria, please fill out the nomination form below and attach a letter of club endorsement from your club coach.
